Telephone Operator Recordings: Bryant Pond, Maine 1980 vs. Rockland Telephone History Center 2023
Recently at our open house at the Rockland Telephone History Center, I had an opportunity (quite by accident), to make some audio recordings of what was going on at the museum open house during a busy time while people were coming in and using our telephones to place calls, through our telephone operators, to other display telephones throughout the museum, and for our telephone operators to take in calls from all over the world to connect them to other callers as part of our “Party-Lines” conference set up.
While putting these recordings together, it reminded me of some of the audio recordings I have from around 1980, of the operators at Bryant Pond, Maine, connecting calls throughout their village. Bryant Pond had the last fully operational hand crank telephone exchange in the United States. This was pulled out of service on October 11th, 1983. Until this system was pulled out of service, all of the town’s crank phones were connected to the switchboard that was located in the home of Elden & Barbara Hathaway. I was lucky enough to have visited this exchange back in the summer of 1980 while it was still in operation.
In this audio documentary, on the first audio recording, you will hear the telephone operators at Bryant Pond, Maine, back in 1980, connecting calls through the two old magneto switchboards that served the 448 customers on the Bryant Pond exchange. On the second recording, you will hear the visitors making calls and the telephone operators at the Rockland Telephone History Center while we were connecting calls. The recording device was on my switchboard (an Automatic Electric BD89-C Universal switchboard that takes both common battery and magneto - crank phones - on the same board), so you will hear both crank and non crank phones on my switchboard. The other operators are using common battery switchboards (the type where a lamp lights up on the switchboard when you pick up a phone.) Though two different arrangements, see if you can hear the similarities between these two recordings that are 43 years apart.
If you would like more information about the Rockland Telephone History Center, and the work we are doing to help preserve old telephone equipment and telephone operator history, please feel free to write to the museum curator, Chris Ricciotti by email at Ricciotti@aol.com, or by phone or text at (207) 382-8300. We are always interested in what your history is, so feel free to share your stories with us!
Thank you for your interest!

Greetings everyone. After a long hiatus, we had a great open house at the Rockland Telephone History Center on Saturday, November 18th, from 12 to 5pm. Helen Kane was quite a popular icon in the 1920's with a very recognizable voice - the prototype of what would eventually become the Betty Boop Cartoon series. I know a fair amount about her music, but what I didn't know was that she was also in film and in some dance numbers. I love to dance, and I found this scene to be quite intriguing, and it put quite a smile on my face! I'm posting this t...

Rockland Switchboard & Telephone History Center - Whitman Operator!
Переглядів 1,9 тис.5 років тому
This is one of the most comical of the videos that we shot during the Rockland Telephone History Center Open House on June, 23rd, 2018. The Whitman Operator is one of local Abington GAR Ladies, Debra DiFranco. She has a great sense of humor and it was very entertaining watching her create her own history here at our museum! At the museum, we encourage people not only to pick up any phone in our...

How much was this whole setup ? The washer the wringer the basin ?
could do without the potty mouthed chick.
Its Feb 2023, I don't know how I ended up here but I'm glad I did because this was really cool. Thanks!
i cant imagine doing this for more than 30 mins
I have one love mine
Everybody is misinterpreting Stewart. He’s not saying what you want him to say. Stewart’s saying that we as a society should embrace the fact that there is anti-semitism in our country so ingrained that there are false narratives accepted as truth. But that we should have a conversation about that false belief because he thinks it is false and should be debunked. He also only agrees with one statement Kanye made in relation to this broader question not anything else Kanye said.
Such high quality materials used back then. That stuff was built to last. plugged and unplugged hundreds of thousands of times over the years. Insane.
When phones first came out, it was amazing to me.
Very soon we would be using these systems if the morons continue using vinyl records and cassettes.
My Mom claimed while working for NET, she could hear the conversation and not be heard, by holding the plug partially in-place. This was also an immediate written warning. Supposedly all the operators knew about this, but it didn't happen for this very reason.
I really want one of these, but they are just so expensive.
Thank-you a million times - what a wonderful idea and what a great opportunity for all to enjoy. Old Telco family like my wife and I enjoyed this immensely !
Back in the mid 1976 I knew operator codes to many cities and states across the country. I was able to dial directly to these operator switchboards like the one shown here. I got in trouble with AT&T SECURITY not realizing I was tying up their trunk lines not realizing that I was doing so. I thought that anything you were able to dial into was all right to do so but it wasn't. I was told to never call inward operators again and those calls were not supposed to be going through that I dialed.
What fun!
Imagine that's what people did for a living all day, I'm sure it wasn't constant like that for 8 hours - otherwise they might lose their minds!
They don't deliver to the UK and I can't understand how the price is justified with the wooden legs. Over a $1000?! Shame though because it looks fab!
Does anyone know any resources to learn about telephones around the very early 1900s? Specifically around 1905? I know telephone networks had been set up but I'm curious about the very early days of operators. Thanks!
Yeah shame they don't deliver to uk
the short wood legs are the bad on this machine, the wood will eventueally mold as seen in the 2nd user, machine sits too low. It's defentally over priced. better legs not wooden , steel adjustable height legs would make it a lagit complete washer. but I won't buy it because its not quite lagit for the price as is.
I think this is neat, I'm 20 years old and I wish this was still a thing.
Love the presentation with the old time music and screen descriptions. Nice job.
that looks extremely stressful. this kind of job will age people fast, and/or start a deadly cancer. No thanks
Not worth the price . Weld up your own .
Can you run shirts and pants with buttons and zippers through the ringer?
Yes
this squeezing equipment, after squeezing the clothes it still drips? I have never seen one live I have this doubt.
Of course there is still some water left in the items. you can pass them through again, as many people do. This is how people washed clothes forever! The wringer, which can be purchased separately, is life changing.

Ok. I’ve been hemming and hawing over getting the washer and the wringer set from Lehman’s but at $975 bucks for the washer part alone and almost $300 for the wringer this has been deal breaker for me. Leslie sold it for me. I sent your video to my friend and she has a hidden skill I did not know about. She’s a welder! HA! So I’m gonna drive out to Arizona and were gonna build our washers. I can then afford the wringer part. I think were gonna design a foot peddle instead of that one armed hand crank. Looks totally annoying even if only washing for 5-8 minutes. I’m going to build a mud porch/laundry room with a propane or wood burning stove and will toss in some super long gloves so I can do my laundry in the winter too. THANKS for your video!
This machine has always intrigued me. I'm getting tired of the Wonderwash and 5 gallon Home Depot buckets. Though I will say...Pretty lame how this nearly 10 minute video has about 2 minutes of your actual content, padded with a 1 minute Powerpoint intro and the rest is just blatantly stealing other people's videos. There aren't many videos on this subject, don't know why you had to rip them off? The second guy's video is literally right above you in any simple search result...
I am so thrilled to see this mixing of historical telephony viewed by modern technology. My late husband would have LOVED to see this.
They want 850.00. Seems like you could by a very good top load for the price!!! Price is way too high!!!
I'm employed at a facility which once was a 1920s Hotel. We still have a switchboard which recently started to malfunction. Does anyone know a repair technician? The switchboard is the same as the one seen in this video.
I wonder how often those mouth pieces were cleaned out back in the day. I imagine all manner of foul grossness collected in there.
Never. One enjoyed the lip gloss from the previous operator.
Been contemplating it for over a year. Just ordered one the other day.
oh how i miss them intercept messages lol.
How do you empty it? Will it work for towels and blankets?
I have had mine for four years now it cleans better than electric washer I think I love mine. They may cost a lot but in the long run it will out live you lol.I went threw 9 electric washer this has already pad for it's self.
Just bought it on back order from lehmans. It was 20 percent off but then shipping was 190 dollars lol. Is it real heavy?
Do you still do this? I would love to be an operator!
Very cool to watch the young generation learn and perform a skill that would begin to look old fashioned over a half a century ago. I had a great uncle that worked as a switchboard operator for Michigan Bell, straight out of high school, in 1953 or '54, because that about the time he graduated, I think. Though he has been gone for 13 years, I remember as a teenager, him telling me how much he loved that job, and at that time most of the operators were women, as many of the men were in the Korean war and just coming home when he started. Retired after 37 years.
Terrible news. She was one of my favorite people.
Thank you for putting this beautiful tribute together for Eleanor. Seeing Ruth and others who’ve left us too soon…
I will miss her!
awesome !
Bunch’s FREAKS!!!!!
Hey Chris, I have been in same journey and moved from London to Wales in UK. I would love one of these washers but I can't find a UK distributer. Anyone know of one please?
Thank you for doing this! What memories it holds for me, when I was a teen I worked in a hospital, (night shift) I would relieve the switchboard operator for her 30 min lunch. I was the11 to 7 maintenance man. (goofing off)
